ALUMNI STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FOR THE JACK KEROUAC SCHOOL

We, the undersigned alumni of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University are alarmed by the proposed action of Naropa’s current administrative body under President Stuart Lord. We strongly agree with the current student body, that the proposed plans potentially jeopardize the legacy and future of one of the greatest creative writing programs in this country, unique in the world, and are a misinterpretation of if not contrary to the spirit, values, and the very mission on which Naropa University and The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics was founded.

We, totally and wholeheartedly support the actions of the current students to address this problem directly and in force, if the legacy and original mission of Naropa and The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics is not kept intact.

We urge the administration to fully meet the current students’ demands, in respect to the future graduates and what the legacy of the former students contribution to society as a whole has been.

In this, we respectfully demand your full attention:

WE WILL SUPPORT the continued integrity of the Writing & Poetics Department and creative and administrative direction thereof kept intact.

WE WILL SUPPORT a intact mission statement from the legacy of The Naropa Institute’s founder Chogyam Trungpa Rimpoche and the founders of The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics Allen Ginsberg and Anne Waldman.

WE WILL SUPPORT complete creative control, faculty hiring, and departmental decision-making by the Writing and Poetics Department and Kerouac School.

WE WILL SUPPORT the premise of keeping the integrity of notable faculty of the highest concern for the development of the student body.

WE WILL NOT SUPPORT a subsumed administrative body into one creative arts program with a leadership or administrative role outside of either Writing & Poetics or The Jack Kerouac School.

WE WILL NOT SUPPORT administrative control over hiring, curriculum, or anything pertaining to the intact, living legacy of the Writing & Poetics Department and The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics.

WE WILL NOT SUPPORT the use of budgetary concerns to hold the Writing & Poetics and Jack Kerouac School politically powerless to programs with a lesser understanding of the core principles of which the department and Kerouac School was founded and has maintained since inception in 1974.

WE FULLY SUPPORT the integrity and design of the founding directors of The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, and the continued expansion of that vision into the 21st century.

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND a full investigation by The Board of Trustees into the practices of the current administration and it’s dislocating, disenfranchising responses to communication and community building and trust within Naropa proper.
